What is the NBR Rubber ?

Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (NBR) is a kind of synthetic rubber, which is copolymerized by Acrylonitrile and Butadiene.

Chemical structure and synthesis

Monomer: The main monomers of NBR are Acrylonitrile (-CH2-CH(CN)-) and Butadiene (-CH2-CH=CH-CH2-).

Polymerization method: NBR is usually synthesized by emulsion polymerization, which is a method of dispersing monomers into tiny droplets and polymerizing them using an emulsifier in an aqueous medium.

Acrylonitrile content: The content of acrylonitrile can vary between 18% and 50%, which determines the oil and chemical resistance of the rubber. The higher the content, the better the oil resistance, but the elasticity and cold resistance will be reduced.

Oil resistance: NBR has good resistance to oils, aliphatic hydrocarbons and certain chemical solvents due to its polar cyano group (-CN).

Heat resistance: NBR can be used in temperatures ranging from -50°C to 100°C, and some specially formulated NBR can even be used at higher temperatures.

Mechanical properties: NBR has good tensile strength, tear strength and resistance to permanent deformation in compression.

Processing and vulcanization
